NET METERING
Net Metering, Micro-Fit and Off-Grid Solar Systems
Net Metering Program
Thinking of using a renewable “green” energy technology to generate your own electricity and reduce your monthly costs? Net metering might be the ideal solution for you.
Our Net Metering program is available to any Hydro customer who generates electricity primarily for their own use from a renewable energy source (wind, water, solar radiation or agricultural biomass) using equipment with a total nameplate rating of 500 kW or less.
Net metering allows you to send electricity generated from Renewable Energy Technologies (RETs) to Hydro distribution system for a credit towards your electricity costs. Excess generation credits can be carried forward for up to 11 months, including the 11th month, to offset future electricity costs. Information on connecting micro generation (up to 10 kW) to Hydro system is available.
More information about net metering can be obtained from your local Hydro provider, please see link to Hydro.
What is Solar Power?
Solar power uses the energy from the sun to directly generate electricity and heat. It is an abundant, renewable, sustainable energy source.
Sunlight is converted to electricity using photovoltaic or solar cells. Photovoltaic (PV) cells are semiconductor devices, usually made of silicon, which contain no liquids, corrosive chemicals or moving parts.
They produce electricity as long as light shines on them, they require no maintenance, do not pollute and they operate silently, making photovoltaic energy the cleanest and safest method of power generation.
Microfit
The microFIT Program was launched in 2009 as part of the Ontario government’s efforts to increase renewable energy in the province.
The program provides homeowners and other eligible participants with the opportunity to develop a small or “micro” renewable electricity generation project (10 kilowatts (kW) or less in size) on their property.
Under this program, you will be paid a guaranteed price over a 20-year term for all the electricity you produce and deliver to the province’s electricity grid.
Get paid for the power you produce, with prices that: are designed to cover the costs of a typical project, ROI is approximate 10 years,

Off-Grid Solar Systems
An off-grid home/Stand alone system is a system able to operate completely independently of public electrical utilities. An off-grid solar electric home can be either, “autonomous” or “hybrid”. Autonomous homes rely solely on solar power to generate electricity while hybrids supplement solar power with other sources such as wind, micro-hydro, and fuel-fired generators. In most cases an off-grid home will require batteries to operate.
Ideal projects are cottages, homes in rural areas, life style
When designing an off-grid system, the first question you ask is: “How much power do I need?”
